BlackBook Lowdown

Some of the best Northern Italian in the whole city is served up by Emiliano and Anna, the fabulous Venetian-Brooklynite duo. Casual, rustic-elegant, accidentally romantic. Ideal place for taking your in-laws and their unlimited credit line. Short menu but it's all good, flesh and noodles flavored with fennel, black olives, garlic and sage. No resys, not even if you're Jennifer Connelly, so always a wait but always worth it.

For my wife and I, this is the go-to for a birthday/anniversary/parents-or-in-laws-in-town. Charming atmo, the cuisine is adventurous but not aloof, and never mediocre. If you didn't line up before opening, big deal--just means you have drinks in their wine bar around the block. I love that you order your apps at the wine bar, and when your table comes up, they transport everything to the main restaurant for you. Nothing too red-saucy, this isn't that kind of Italian.
