BlackBook Lowdown
Axum is named after the coronation place of Christian Ethiopian kings which some hint is also the resting place of the illusive Ark of the Covenant. There's a definite Che Guevara vibe, with a crowd of Euroskeptics, students turned socialists, and trustafarians arguing about all in sundry, albeit in a slightly stoned way. Both Harvey Milk and Jack Kerouac would feel right at home, with the open-mic evenings, live jazz, poetry jams, and water-cooler worthy art exhibits. Indeed, this 1960s-style coffee shop would make the beat generation proud. It opens before noon, while closing time is justifiably hazy.
