BlackBook Lowdown

Dark, secluded hideaway tucked below Marcus Samuelsson's stylish Merkato 55. Like stumbling into the Sultan of Brunei's secret lair, minus the Estonian love slaves. Thumping beats, potent (and pricey) drinks, dark brick, deep brown leather couches, giant ornate crystal chandelier hung extra low. Foggy well completes pleasant, almost soft porn look. Sneaky La Esquina-style through-the-kitchen entrance to keep the Meatpacking District riffraff out. Does all this add up to the new Double Seven? The pretty blondes wiggling their way inside seem to think so.

Impressively overstocked ladies' room and a comfortably full Saturday night dance floor are a transient tribute to the subterranean club's yet-to-be-exploited scene. For those that can get in, let's hope it lasts.

This club was awesome. I went a lot over the summer, but as the summer came to an end I realized more and more "randoms" that wandered in from Tenjune or Kiss and Fly. The club was only fun until it started to become mainstream.
