BlackBook Lowdown

Understated interior for wooing sophisticates and loyal locals. Effortless charm attracts literati and, thank God, very few glitterati. Meticulous menu, presentation, service. The tuna carpaccio is like buttah but nothing's better than the burger, saddled with heaping Roquefort. Lamb's always a Kiwi-imported winner, ditto the dueling petite filet mignons. Romance with a side of beef, sexier than that sounds. We're hungry like the wolf.

We were amazed to come back to NYC after a 7 year hiatus and find Cafe Loup, which has been around since the 70's, still serving excellent meals in a quietly sophisticated room with plenty of space
between tables, blessedly tasteful and muted background music, interesting art, and good, if somewhat informal, service. Prices are modest, so we found it a good value.
