Shanghainese dining is renowned for its meaty, oily, semi-sweet flavours rather than its sense of fun. Cheng Cheng's is out to change that, with a bright, airy and artsy interior decorated with bold colored furniture, paintings and antique teapots. The menu, too, eschews the usual Shanghainese seriousness, adding in some peppery and super-spicy Sichuan dishes and a few other pan-Chinese treats. The mainly local crowd already seems to be enjoying this dinnertime departure.
