BlackBook Lowdown

We were excited at the debut of Cork Lounge, mistakenly thinking it was a reopening of the old Cork winebar on Lincoln. How sad we were on opening week to find just another poser Irish pub riddled with flatscreen TVs and the overwhelming smell of fresh paint. Add "vintage" European liquor advertising posters and you've got the crown, scepter and orb of mediocrity. Prediction: its proximity to the El will make it a one-drink tide-over for weeknight alcoholics on their way to someplace darker, seedier and more interesting.

We're happy to see the Cork open again after being closed by the CTA for a year. Not many people now realize that Cork Lounge was opened in the 1940's and has been a neighborhood social mainstay ever since. I like their daily specials list and now that they've remodeled, you'll find 14 draft beers, a good selection of bottles and plenty of Irish whiskey. I like the 8 foot pool table and the updated glycol cooled beer system with gas balance mixer. (think NASA for beer, the Guinness is spot on and delicious.) Just don't ask the owner about the systems unless you want an earful of beer techie talk... I'd go to the Cork all the time to hang out and relax. The beer prices are the same, it's still a good value. Oh, they have plenty of screens and sports packages to keep all the fans happy. I'll be going back to the Cork as soon as possible.
