Eatonville

Editorial Review

Just what U Street was missing: another African-American tribute theme diner, this one dedicated to "Their Eyes Were Watching God" authoress Zora Neale Hurston. Weathered wood, splashy murals, and perky waitstaff all eager attempts to transform ground floor glass ‘n steel condo tower into geographically non-specific, Dixieland coastal backwater circa 1912. Fancy Southern repertoire gets cred for hot gumbo, real black-eyed peas and standout Po' boy sandwiches. Early-career, black urban professionals love being a targeted market.
