BlackBook Lowdown

Chef Akhtar Nawab ditches the E.U. to return to his roots—Kentucky and India. Nouveau American cooking with über-creative touches. No fear of gamier tastes, i.e. pigs feet crispy style, wild boar and cumin, sweetbreads with pineapple and pink peppercorns. Designer Jason Volenec reprises rustic chic of Cantina and Allen & Delancey with romantic barn-wood ceiling, red drapes, whitewashed brick. Enjoy the whole ethos in a glass via the 8th Wonder, a chai-infused Kentucky bourbon cocktail with a hint of cardamom (AKA elettaria in Latin).

Great date spot

On a random stretch of 8th street (wedged between shoe shops and head shops) lies this little romantic gem. The decor is very charming - almost rustic meets modern with a dash of surrealism (check their use of worn doors as banquette partitions). But the real star is the food which is outstanding (the sweetbreads in particular!). The staff is very knowledgeable too about both the wine list and the unusual menu. They don't seem to get much of a crowd on a Monday but I hear it's jammed Thur-Sun. Definitely worth checking out.
