Domination over the air-kissy Gold Coast lunch scene by Ralph Lauren’s RL has been almost uncontested, the sleekly styled Fred’s, perched high above the Chicago outpost of fashion mecca Barneys is a new and worthy contender. (We love the Barney-and-Fred Flintstones pun, but Fred is the real-life son of founder Barney Pressman.) But where RL has lots of, well, fireplaces, Fred’s flaunts a rather theatrical lakeview terrace, where the seeing and being-seen-over lobster salads and sautéed chickenlivers are nothing short of Felliniesque.
