A chic hotel entering the escalating designer hotel fray in an otherwise un-fabulous stretch of Murray Hill (The Ace, The Carlton and The Gansevoort Park are all close neighbors), the Hotel LOLA is a more glittery alternative to the competition’s less flamboyant charms. Susan Jacques’ lobby design drips with drama, a massive mirror-ball chandelier presiding over a darkly elegant lobby (velvet mohair seating!) that could easily double as a nightclub. Her partner in aesthetic conception was the legendary photographer Matthew Rolston, whose lighting schemes and art direction add a dash of classic Parisian glamour to the proceedings, with dramatic murals incorporating fashion photos by the likes of William Klein and Melvin Sokolsky.
