Katy Trail Ice House

Editorial Review

Katy Trail Ice House is the best place to go if you're looking for that rare combination of laid-back yet always busy. The no-frills spot lacks in decor - unless you count big screen TVs as decor these days, but it makes up for it other ways. It's pet-friendly, baseball cap and shorts-friendly, and in general, pretty damn friendly. The waitstaff and kitchen are fairly quick considering the crowds, and the bartenders will bother to break a sweat when needed. It's typical bar food at its finest: burgers, nachos, chicken sandwiches, etc., but it's the Texas-centric drink menu with all of the Texas-based beers and liquors you can think of, that make this place feel like home. There's even plenty of Shiner for the less adventurous out-of-towners. The bar tables inside and picnic tables outside are always full with a regular crowd mix of frat boys and their sorority girls, young professionals and a few creepers in there for good measure, but they all keep to themselves. When games are on, it's hard to find a spot for a group but pulling chairs from here and there never seems to be a problem. The friendly Hill Country vibe seems to rub off on people - even the frat boys.  In a sea of fake people and pretentious places, this one can be considered your safe haven if you just don't feel like putting on a show.
