BlackBook Lowdown

Uechi-san's latest endeavor sends him back to his original Studio City stomping grounds. Opening quietly (eclipsed in coverage by the new Katsuya at L.A. Live) on Ventura Boulevard, this one is the fanciest of all, the crown jewel of elegance. A pared-down ambiance for serious food lovers.

Kiwami officially had its soft opening tonight. The menu is more upscale and "Extreme" as its name implies [Kiwami]. This place is all about the food, especially since Chef Katsuya San no longer has a substantial voice over his SBE counterparts due to the shadiness that is SBE; but he did receive a nice compensation and will continue to for the life of KATSUYA BY STARK. Now, he is able to concentrate his efforts on this endeavor and will be working at the venue full time to ensure its quality and to give its guest the opportunity to meet and have their food prepared specifically by Katsuya San himself. As SBE continues to build bigger and flashier Katsuya's in its quest for National dominance, its food quality has already shown signs of degradation with it's new SBE Glendale venue. Kiwami will be a sure fire hit, being as how Master Sushi Chef Katsuya San's talented team of leaders is being tapped from all previous venues and not to mention Mr. Katsuya himself is going to serve sushi at it's VIP sushi bar and run the whole show himself. Can't wait to try it... By the way, I am not an editor or food critic, just a former server of one of the SBE Katsuya's. I love Chef Katsuya San and want all his namesake restaurants to flourish; but disapprove of how SBE handled the situation with its holdings of KATSUYA BY STARK. The relationship between Chef Katsuya San and SBE changed dramatically when Glendale opened, and we see how that venture has turned out [Half of the restaurant closed indefinitely and awful reviews on all accounts]. Chef Katsuya is a hard working man and deserves success. I am an avid reader of eaterLA and a person who loves a great place to eat.
