A short hop from Xintiandi, this rather offbeat hotel has chosen an unusual stylistic agenda: a Mediterranean-themed casa whose rooms are dressed with retro 1920s Shanghai furnishings and flourishes. The result is a little contrived. Though the building itself heavily design-led, the service is not quite boutique standard, but the rooms are attractively designed and well spaced, and the location is excellent.
