Lava’s new space on Milwaukee lacks both the sinister vibe and the elbow-room that it had on Damen. It’s now run by the owners of Small Bar, known for its extensive beer list. But when we say “bass please,” we’re not asking for an Irish ale. Though Lava’s excellent jungle and drum-n-bass nights remain in effect, the soundsystem is missing something. Does the smaller space demand lower volume or does it need more speakers? When it’s dubstep, we want to FEEL the beat till we’re black and blue, not black and tan.
