How exactly does hipsterism mutate once it reaches Asian shores? It’s hard to define—the tight jeans, canvas shoes and witty T-shirts are still prominent, but the jeans are now more Jap-cool, the shoes are all Converse All-Stars, and the T-shirts feature absurdist collections of random English words. And the sizes are tiny. A section called Xplus at the far end of LCX has all of that. Its huge collection of local boutique brands pride itself on funky extra stitchings. The rest of the store carries a combination of routine international brands (Calvin Klein Jeans, Levi’s) and local powerhouse labels (Salad, Bauhaus). Hong Kong’s closest thing to Urban Outfitters, department store version. Furniture store Homeless, denim specialist D-Mop and watchmaker o.d.m. are also represented.
