BlackBook Lowdown
Marie-Paule Burrus and her father opened their original "steak hut" location off the Champs in 1959. This Montparnasse outpost is their latest addition - right around the corner from Le Select and not far from the cemetery that holds Sartre and Simone. The formula chez Relais hasn't changed in fifty years - nostalgic decor, gruff waitresses in tight dresses, and comforting (some say glorious) food. No-choice menu requires only one decision, "how do you like it done?" Steak and fries then follow in unlimited quantities. You'll find "secret sauce" smeared across the faces of tourists and French food critics alike. Prices are easy - add a bottle of red and some profiteroles and the two of you are still walking out for under 80€, easy. Come early or late or be prepared to wait - no reservations taken. Open every day.
