Le Select, and other nearby Montparnasse haunts like Le Dôme and La Rotonde, were for Picasso, Henry Miller, and Hemingway what the Café Flore and Les Deux Magots later were for Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir: cheap places to drink. Expect the opposite today -- prices targeted at guidebook-toting tourists and nary a real artist or intellectual in sight.
