Inching beyond its cult-like status, Matohu has built a devoted following since debuting in 2006. Drawing inspiration from Japan's Keicho period (the late 16th and early 17th centuries), duo Hiroyuki Horihata and Makiko Sekiguchi steep their designs in ethereal notions, like creating an atmosphere of the draped body, while also paying mind to a very Japanese style of restraint. Also evident is an almost Belgian sense of elegant deconstructionism. Their first boutique, designed by architect Mitsuru Kiryu, exquisitely reflects the graceful subtlety of the clothes, with simple whitewashed cedar and a minimalist racking system. The space will also feature rotating exhibitions of like-minded artistic souls.
