London’s oldest restaurant has been sending plates of classic English food out of its Covent Garden kitchen since 1798. The world may have changed a lot since then, but Rules stubbornly hasn’t. Its menu, which includes the likes of potted shrimps, and cold lamb and beef with a veal and ham pie, has been enjoyed by everyone from Charles Dickens to Buster Keaton, so the owners are unlikely to start following food fads now. It’s worth a visit for the elegant Edwardian-era dining room alone.
