Sogo

Editorial Review

It’s very dated now, but that’s not a terrible thing. It’s the one-stop, no-bullshit Japanese department store (owned by a Hong Kong company now) that it was when it opened in 1985, and therefore it is absolutely packed with tourists from mainland China. Why does shopping have to come with all that fancy halogen lighting? Some of us mean business when we shop and don’t want to waste time. That’s what we admire about Chinese shoppers, and they dig this about Sogo. On the weekends, you can barely find a spot to stand on, 24 years later. It rules, like a pope, over the busiest pedestrian crossroad in the city, maybe the world. The new store in Tsim Sha Tsui (underground, below Salisbury Garden) is glitzier, but that almost defeats the purpose.
