Southport Avenue north of Belmont is lousy with frat-boy drinking holes but, like Chuck Norris, something about the sheer longevity of these venerable establishments makes them worthy of respect. A typical mix of old and new, Southport Lanes has the feel of a good old beer bar in front (dark with plenty of beers on pull) and a Dave & Buster’s in back (a clean-looking, well-lit room with high-quality pool tables). The upstairs offers a rather cramped four lanes of bowling, and is possibly the last place in Chicago where the pins are manually replaced by pinboys.
