The Alembic

Editorial Review

Navigating this dismal stretch of Haight is a bit like "Vice City: San Francisco" - dodge the snarling gutter punks and steer well-clear of the white-guys-with-dreadlocks Burning Man types. Your reward is one of the smartest, most civilized bars in the city, where the artisanal cocktail scene finds a sophisticated, low-key home. The combination of dark wood, exposed bulbs and well-appointed staff politely describing what goes into a Jack Rose feels a bit like New York. Whiskey, bourbon and scotch menu is comprehensive, food is quite good if there's a table open. Sundays is Savoy Cocktail Night.
