BlackBook Lowdown

Real tears were shed in East Hampton when this venerated bar closed two years ago. A group led by Andrew Chapman, who owns August in the West Village (the group also includes Jon Bon Jovi, Ronald Perelman and Renee Zellweger) has ressurected the much-loved local haunt. The Mexican is still killer though a touch more soshisticated -- though the Parrot was a never a taco truck. The menu goes way beyond basics, so while you can snack on soft shell taquito, you may go all in on Meatballs al Chipotle (Tender meatballs -- called Albondigas -- in a roasted tomato and chipotle chile sauce, chayote julienne and fresh cilantro) or grilled tuna soaked in a tequila, garlic and citrus marinade. Of course, margaritas in mason jar are back in all their glory, though, it bears saying, that these are actually better than -- they pack a tart punch with large amounts of fresh squeezed lime juice --  (and nearly twice the price of) the old ones. Wheras the original restaurant was the haphazard work of a crew of desheveled surfers, this new Parrot is run by professionals with money behind them, and it shows.

The Blue Parrot, East Hampton, NY

Posted by Food Sleuth on Thursday, August 20, 2009

The old Blue Parrot is gone, long live the new! But the old Blue Parrot afficionados can rejoice that the comfortable atmosphere has been lovingly recreated. The casual décor, and great margaritas, zesty with fresh lime flavor and served in a mason jar rimmed with blue salt will satisfy even the most nostalgic. The chef at the Blue Parrot, thankfully, hasn’t tried to recreate the tex/mex fare we all remember. The smoky chipotle guacamole, the burritos and taquitos filled with fish, steak, chicken or vegetables and the less expected mussels steamed in beer and cilantro, the meatballs in a piquant tomato sauce and the juicy Cornish hen were a delightful surprise. I’ve visited several times, and sampled the local fish entrees, my favorite being a pink swordfish, served with spinach and tiny roasted potatoes. The daily soups and ceviche have been inventive and satisfying. The real surprise was the Black Angus hamburger, served with a generous helping of batter dipped fries, crisped to perfection. Tucked away down an alley, this casual dining spot still draws the crowds and the people watching is an added bonus while waiting for a weekend table. This old/newcomer definitely fills the need for a casual meeting/drinking/dining spot in this upscale resort.
