There’s no website, no deluxe spa or fine-dining restaurant and it never advertises its services – but The Nine’s six rooms are always booked out weeks in advance. The hotel is tucked away behind an unmarked gate in a Shanghai longtang lane in the former French Concession. Once inside, the fine garden and statue-filled terrace are a taste of what’s to come. The lobby and rooms are beautifully furnished with bespoke wooden creations, including a giant dining table fashioned from two historic doors.
