BlackBook Lowdown

Thick with history and bricky ambience, this funky, split level gastropub/gallery has been a local fave throughout several owners. Hit the patio and try some of the seven deadly sin-themed martinis, or share a pitcher of cardinal virtue-themed sangria with your brunch benny or pesto shrimp omelette. Lunch and dinner offerings include hearty salads, sandwiches, French pastry pizzas, burgers and tasty yam fries. Dubbed best local beer cafe by the Campaign for Real Ale, Sundays are cask ale nights.

Service here, mainly if you're sitting front and center at the bar, is sub-par. As a consistent local to the whip I've finally decided to ditch it as a regular stop any night of the week. It's difficult to get any of the bartenders attention for your next drink let alone your bill. Snarky, up tight, full of themselves? not sure...not my scene.

This place is rubbish. I've had bad experiences with them the last couple of times, once a pigeon feather had actually made its way into my salad (and into my mouth), then generally mediocre food and a snippy, inattentive waitress with a big smile and short skirt. Gotta love that. This place has great atmosphere and pricing, but poor food quality, hygiene (obviously), and staff attitudes. Head further up Main St. for better options.
