Madonna

No place to go on a Saturday night? Well, if you find yourself in the same joint as Madonna, then I guess you're doing okay. I will be in the same room as Madonna this Saturday night, as Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project is providing the action. I am told they’ll be sponsoring and curating parties occurring simultaneously in 50 countries on 5 continents. We get Madonna, and other countries get Kelis, CSS, Basement Jaxx, Janelle Monae, and of course, 40 plus more fabulous acts and DJs.

As a manager and partner at 4AM DJs, I’m always arranging performances, events, and photo shoots around the world. Every day, the reports I get back from my DJs sound like the kinds of wild adventures that I rarely get to be a part of as a desk jockey. The people who flock to these stellar international events get to experience the end result of months of prep, but do they really know what a day in the life of a DJ is like? In this monthly column, you'll hear first-hand accounts of DJ war stories, with photos and videos from the world’s best to show for it. In this Tour Diary, you'll read about DJ DL, as he braves the wrath of Irene in the name of a good party. Yours truly, Adam Alpert.

When it comes to nightlife, the W New York Downtown finally seems to be taking the "downtown" part of its name seriously, as evidenced by the line-up of DJs they've secured for a new bi-weekly party at the hotel's Living Room Terrace. Starting tomorrow, with DJ Mia Moretti and her violinist friend Caitlin Moe, and then going every other Tuesday until August 30th, the "Summer Jam" series (lazy name, guys) will feature in chronological order: sophomore clothing founder Chrissie Miller, Paul Sevigny, Jesse Marco, and Jus Ske. (Admittedly, those last two favor the 1Oak/Tenjune/Avenue crowd more than the fashion/art element that's recently cannibalized New York nightlife.)

Tonight, Vanity Fair will host a party at Bumble and Bumble for the StyleLikeU book. Forget about attending—the list has been closed for eons. But I used to be Steve Lewis, so they invited me. No worries, I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow -- or go to 1OAK for the afterparty. I caught up with StyeLikeU’s Dani Baum and asked her all about it.

In an e-mail I received on Friday, my longtime friend Friday Patrick Robertson announced that he is “no longer working at The Darby.” Patrick, of course, was the long time GM at Marquee. He's a nightclub manager who found himself manning the helm at The Darby, which is a restaurant, after leaving Marquee and traveling back to his native South Africa. I felt he left the country to diffuse discontent, as he did go from the powerhouse Strategic Group to the 1OAK/Butter crew.

With the Academy Awards looming just a few weeks away and the Golden Globes behind us, we're smack dab in the middle of awards season. Of course, nightlife has its own awards. Nightclub & Bar has announced 21 winners for the 2011 Nightclub & Bar Awards. Almost 300 nominees that include bars, clubs, restaurants, DJs, and industry professionals were voted on by a panel of judges. These judges are consultants, developers, writers, editors, and trainers in the industry, who are required to rank their first, second, and third choices in each of the categories they're qualified to judge. I was selected as one of the judges, but I’m unaware of the names of others. Names are kept secret so that bribes can't be offered up, but I’m considered way too dumb to take a bribe, and so I reveal myself.

In his decades-old column in last Wednesday’s Village Voice, Michael Musto, the greatest nightlife writer ever, listed his “10 Best NYC Clubs of All Time.” His list was Studio 54, Mudd Club, Area, Danceteria, Jackie 60, Happy Valley, CBGB, The Roxy, The Palladium, and Limelight. He is as right as anybody, as each of us has our own perspective. The list doesn’t go back to joints pre-Michael's viewpoint, like El Morocco or The Cotton Club, and it discounts anything recent with the exception of Happy Valley, which maybe had a moment 5 years ago. My list is pretty close. I would swap out Happy Valley (which was mostly awful), CBGB, and The Roxy in favor of The World, Max’s Kansas City, and Paradise Garage. The others I heartily agree with.

On Saturday night, a pretty friend of mine called me for a recommendation for a place to go out. There were 7 of them, all girls, all attractive, all looking for a place to hang. They didn’t want to buy bottles - that wasn't an option given the Christmas season and the economy - but they wanted a comfortable place to have some drinks and dance. They didn’t want to go to a house club. They wanted variety in their music. I drew a blank. They were too cool for most of the joints around, but didn’t want to go hipster, either. What they needed was a comfortable joint, a non pretentious B crowd without drama and the hustle. Marquee was the only answer.
