What would a festival be without awards? In the this-is-a-first department: Alan Cumming presented Ewan McGregor a Ray-Ban award last night. "This has got to be a first: a Scottish actor presenting an award to another Scottish actor up a mountain in Utah," he said, handing the podium over to his countryman.
With multiple events happening every night of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, it’s not always easy to gracefully bow out of a party invitation. Alan Cumming gave the best excuse we (over)heard so far. When asked last night on his way into the GenArt party if he was coming to a soiree the following night, the Scottish funnyman replied: “I’d love to, but the seals need me.” Cumming is expected tonight at a Humane Society and Bon Appétit gourmet vegan fete for Nigel Barker’s documentary, A Sealed Fate?.
Revered for roles both fantastic and deplorable -- like this one and this one -- Alan Cumming found himself inspired by our President-Elect. The thesp used Barack Obama's victory as a catalyst to get sworn in as an American citizen. Of course, the move also facilitates playing house with his husband of almost two years on both sides of the Atlantic. And in preparation for a premature apocalypse, while many of us were entertaining relocations to Canada, Spain, or perhaps Saadiyat Island, Cumming was spoiled for choice, adding, "If McCain and Palin had won, I may have stayed in bed."
