Alexander Skarsgård and Kate Bosworth may have parted ways romantically, but they're still burning up the double cover of our September issue, hitting newsstands next week. For anyone who's never had the opportunity to be on either side of the velvet rope at a red carpet, lucky you. Doing the red carpet—whether you're conducting the interview or answering the question— has a tendency to be at once boring and unnerving. Basically, you don't want to be asking folks the same questions the person next to you will ask. As the star, you are forced to listen to yourself answering the same question repeatedly to interviewers who are all perched side-by-side like open-mouthed baby birds. If we're in a position to spar over which soap made a larger dent on America's collective consciousness last night--the one about vamps or the one about suits--it means that we've finally settled into a new golden era of TV, one which looks auspiciously free of sitcom laugh tracks and Dick Wolf. But in any case, it seemed the decision to sit through the third season premiere of Mad Men was more of an endurance test that may not have lived up to its hype, than the edge-of-your-seat ohmygoddery that was True Blood last night. And last week, and the week before, and so on.
