Since its founding in 1989, American Apparel enjoyed a meteoric rise that few brands experience. But despite its retail success, one quick trip to its Wikipedia page will remind you of the kind of turmoil the empire, and its ruler Dov Charney, has endured. Still, we love it, and it's an essential brand to a lot of people. So for those of you who haven't turned your backs on Dov, here are our five favorite items at AA.

The latest ad in the great American Apparel Porn Race has been unveiled. The new piece, from what now appears to be a series of raunchy ads for clothing (or something), is once again courtesy of adult artist Boris Lopez. Lopez must have realized that colorless pencil porn eventually loses its luster, because this time he's produced a full-page watercolor of a young, topless blonde bursting out of the “basics” American Apparel is advertising. Well, this was inevitable, right? After a few eventful years of pushing boundaries with their sexually-suggestive sleazy ads, American Apparel has finally let all of the clothing come off, again. The company’s latest ad campaign features what we assume, that they assume, are tastefully nude photos of girls who look not a day older than sixteen. The new, penciled portraits are courtesy of artist Boris Lopez, who has created similarly enticing artwork for illustrious publications such as Hustler’s Barely Legal (that’s porn, guys).

The end of summer shouldn't mean storage for your favorite mini-frocks. Take a tip from Paul & Joe's Fall/Winter 2010 collection on how to bundle up with cozy legwear under knitted jumpers and sheepskin-trimmed shorts. Try a layered look under micro minis, pairing crochet tights with mohair legwarmers or over-the-knee shearling boots. American Apparel cannot catch a break. First, the retailer's extremist employee dress code stipulations were called into question thanks to Gawker getting its hands on internal memos. Then, of course, there was the immigration raid that led to American Apparel's LA factories losing roughly 20% of their workforce. With sales down and finances in the shitter, various outlets have been awaiting an announcement of bankruptcy from the clothing engine that, at one time, seemed to always be on the up and up. With the company now reporting that its first-half of the year losses have been "substantial," according to Women's Wear Daily (the first quarter alone saw drops in profits from $5-$7 million), and, subsequently, perhaps on the precipice of having major trouble getting financing, things are looking grim. "Based on this, and trends occurring in the company’s business after the second quarter and projected for the remainder of 2010, the company may not have sufficient liquidity necessary to sustain operations for the next twelve months," American Apparel told WWD. Meaning, this may very well be the end.
