flaming lips

The Flaming Lips are poised to release The Terror, their thirteenth album—though at times it feels they’ve put out twice that many—on April 2, much to the delight of the thousands of college freshman potheads just discovering them for the first time. Today, however, they’re premiering a new video for “Sun Blows Up Today,” a so-called “exclusive non-album track.”

MCA’s family and friends have hardly had time to grieve for the recently deceased rapper, and already the Beastie Boys, the group that brought him, along with Ad-Rock and Mike D., to fame, are back in hot water.

Last night, former Republican Presidential candidate (and Google problem extraordinaire) Rick Santorum emailed his supporters to let them know he’s endorsing Mitt Romney in the upcoming race to the White House. "Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated," Santorum wrote about his new crush Romney, who was until recently his bitter foe. [Politico]

It’s been a little over a year since Radiohead released their latest record, The King of Limbs, uniting indie rockers and frat boys as only a band as widely adored as Radiohead can. Sure, the band just played a pair of shows at Coachella, but otherwise things have been quiet on the Radiohead front -- or have they?

Thank Brooklyn for this one. Regarding of what the blogosphere might lead us to believe, Shut Up and Play the Hits, the documentary chronicling LCD Soundsystem's last days as a band, probably wouldn't have found much of an audience for a theatrical release (outside of NYC and LA, of course). But thanks to Beastie Boy Adam Yauch's Oscilloscope Laboratories film company, a happy medium has been reached between a cinematic release and video-on-demand: The movie will be shown at special one-night-only engagements this summer, in theaters that won't mind if their patrons start dancing in the aisles. The exclusivity will parallel the finality of LCD's last show, but it's also just a convenient way to make sure everyone gets their taste.

Starting April 19, digital interview magazine The Avant/Garde Diaries is hosting an exciting 21-day arts and culture festival in Los Angeles called Transmission LA: AV Club Curated by Mike D. It's the second installment of the Mercedes-Benz sponsored Transmission series that first took place in Berlin last year, curated by (soon-to-be former Jil Sander creative director) Raf Simons. This year's show is particularly cool because Simons has handed over the reins to none other than Mike D of the legendary hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, who will serve as the event's official curator and artistic director. We took some time out to chat with Mike D about his new role, favorite artists, and art museum peeves.

The 2012 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced this morning and, unsurprisingly, the list of five performers encompasses a wide variety of dudes, and just one lady. The five inductees in the performer category are as follows: Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Laura Nyro, the collected bands The Small Faces / The Faces, and Beastie Boys. Blues guitarist Freddie King will also be inducted as an early influencer of rock and roll. This is the first year that Guns N' Roses were on the ballot, whereas the rest of the performers had been nominated in previous years.

After wrangling half of Hollywood to cameo in the epic video for “Make Some Noise,” the Beastie Boys apparently needed to try pulling off something even more outrageous for the second cut from Hot Sauce Committee Part II. Enter producer Spike Jonze (of Jackass and Being John Malkovich fame), who directed an 11-minute clip for "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" starring the Beastie Boys and Santigold as puppets on a mission to escape a few assassins - no sweat.
