Miranda July is a Los Angeles-based performance artist, writer, actress and film director. Her 2005 feature, Me and You and Everyone We Know, won the Caméra d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Two years ago, she released No One Belongs Here More Than You, a best-selling collection of short stories. July recently completed Eleven Heavy Things, a series of sculptural, interactive works that will be shown at the Venice Biennale, which opens next month.

Where do washed-up rock acts go to die? Anvil! The Story of Anvil relates the history of the titular also-rans, a heavy metal group that, despite early success -- and the wild adulation of Slash, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich and Motörhead frontman Lemmy -- has slipped into utter obscurity. Not that they’ve completely given up: 30 years into their career, singer Steve Kudlow (a.k.a. “Lips”) and drummer Robb Reiner are still at it, despite lousy day jobs (catering and demolition, respectively), record label indifference and a severely diminished fan base. Their tenacity is either admirable or insane.

Au Revoir Simone, Still Night, Still Light (Our Secret Record Company) Brooklyn’s answer to Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis replant their hauntingly personal, bittersweet roots on the follow-up to 2007’s creepy-sweet The Bird of Music. Their third album is a symphony of sterilized electronic sounds brought to life by an intimate encounter between these three Fates and their keyboards. Despite the odd bramble of blunt confrontation (“Trace a Line”), Au Revoir Simone skips through the wet grass of ethereal romanticism (“Tell Me”), proving that they are still alright and, yes, still feather-light. -- Garrett Pruter
