julie taymor bono spider-man

Julie Taymor has been back in the headlines in the last few weeks following her million-dollar lawsuit against the producers of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the Broadway musical she spent nine years creating with musicians Bono and The Edge of U2. In a new interview, Taymor reveals that she was blindsided by her firing, and she also claims that her rockstar colleagues were not always present during the show's extensive preview period.

Congratulations to Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, who went viral today after tearing into an aggro fan in the middle of his band's set at the iTunes Festival in London. After Grohl spotted someone fighting in the crowd (in England, they call them hooligans), he came to the victim's rescue by booting the offender from the show in a profanity-laced tirade. The crowd, of course, loved it. But Grohl isn't the first performer to snap at a misbehaving fan. After the jump, indulge in some the best onstage freakouts ever recorded—and by "best" we mean the only ones we could find on YouTube.

In the 2010 documentary film Ladies And Gentlemen, Gavin Friday, the biggest rock star in the world, one Bono Vox, recalls how his boyhood friends Friday and Guggi Rowan were forced to deflate his figuratively ballooning head as fame first began to exert its powerful hold on him. We all know their attempts at ego deflation were only temporary--but all for the best, really, as no one actually pines for a humble Bono.

In case you hadn't heard, Julie Taymor is all but free from the quagmire that is Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. The speculation is so thick (is she stepping down? did Bono shoo her out?), the sources so numerous, that it's pretty much a done deal. It's sad to see to see an artist of Taymor's talent and conviction fall short of realizing her vision, but Broadway always seemed like an ill fit for her idiosyncratic sensibilities, despite The Lion King's success. The question now is, how will this epic professional and creative letdown affect Taylor's confidence, and therefore her career? Will she rebound with something so mind-meltingly ahead of its time that we won't be able to comprehend it until 2054? Or will she start directing sitcom pilots for NBC? Here are a few career options for the embattled genius.

In January 2010, British fashion designer Sharon Wauchob took the helm of fashion-label Edun as creative director. Launched in 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono, and now co-owned by LVMH, Edun seeks to raise “awareness of the possibilities in Africa and encourage the industry to do business there.” A reported 80% of their products are manufactured in Africa. In 2008, the company, together with the Wildlife Conservation Society, created Conservation Cotton, a partnership with Invisible Children in Northern Uganda. The initiative seeks to support 3,500 cotton farmers in Northern Uganda. Currently, Edun is going through something of a brand re-launch, and Wauchob, a graduate of London's Central Saint Martin’s, seems like a shrewd pick to navigate the way. Wauchob is no stranger to the fashion world. She worked as a ready-to-wear and accessories designer for Louis Vuitton from 1997–2001, and launched her eponymous label in Paris in 1999, which is now sold at over 120 stores in 40 countries. This past week in Milan, Wauchob presented her second menswear collection for Edun (New York fashion week will see the anticipated re-launch of womenswear). Wauchob took a few moments to talk about her experiences at Edun, the creative influences for the autumn/winter 2011/12 collection, called “Storytellers and Liars,” and working with Ireland's most famous couple.

● Will this man be the salvation of SNL's uneven 36th season? (Not Jason Sudekis, the guy next to him.) [Hulu] ● Bono has finally seen the musical whose success or failure will have no impact on his career whatsoever. [NYT] ● Here is your first peek at Andrew Garfield as a Peter Parker who, judging by how he dresses, probably has a Deerhunter song or two on his iPod. [ONTD]

The outpouring of support for the people of Haiti is at once so inspiring and so frustrating. The star power that turned out for last night's Hope For Haiti Now was truly blinding, full of generous A-listers doing anything they could to raise money for the victims of disaster. But why must George Clooney wink in the TV's direction to inspire everyday people to do what they can to help? And Bono, King of the World, makes everything nigh insufferable. Sure, Beyoncé has grace for days, but the whole thing just reeks of shallow first world guilt and schmaltz.

Last night was a wonderful night across the world where if you had never experienced the miracles of getting a colonic, your television brought one to you! So to speak. Celebrities, actors, and other famous people who aren't Heidi Montag, Taylor Momsen, or Lindsay Lohan all joined hands and sang a little prayer for the little country that loves its carbs in a big way. And unless you were "getting drunk for Haiti" or "going on blind dates for Haiti" or "eating lasagna for one for Haiti," you probably remember every moment of this poignant television event like it happened yesterday (which it did!) But in case you fall in the 97% of people who had something else better "to do for Haiti," a quick recap after the break.

Good god. Jay-Z and Bono are teaming up to save Haiti. Or rather, on a track to save Haiti. Surely, we can't disparage any charitable efforts being made on behalf of a country in need of all the disaster response and support it can get. But that said, can't Jay-Z just record his own track? Will Bono ever not make an appearance on a charity tribute song? Answers, to both of those questions: no. As evidenced by the tragedy that struck Haiti, the world is a cruel and unfair place, and must do things to its inhabitants to demonstrate how cruel it can be. Like delivering a new Jay-Z track to the world...with Bono on it. We've tried to determine exactly what the collaborative effort will sound like using the magic of the YouTube Doubler. Or, in an ideal world, what it would sound like....

Sure, in ways, it's an unlikely if disparate meshing of talent. But this concert, the latest in a series of events produced to fight the spread in AIDS in Africa as a part of (RED)NIGHTS, finds an anchor in celebrated singer-composer-painter Gavin Friday, a childhood friend of Bono. His band is among those performing. Other performers besides Johansson and Love include Antony Hegarty, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright (last seen celebrating Édith Piaf), Andrea Corr (yes, of those Corrs), Laurie Anderson, and perennial post-punk princess Lydia Lunch.
