The embarrassing "We Are the World" remake deserved its skewering on Saturday Night Live this weekend. While unquestionably a well-intentioned project, the line-up of stars was weak, the rendition weaker and the beyond-the-grave participation of Michael Jackson just plain creepy. Either 1985 had a lot more going on pop-wise, or Quincy Jones’ superstar tractor beam has significantly weakened over the time. Whatever the case, it’s nothing you’d want to experience twice, especially when there are other, more diverting song collaborations devoted to the same good cause—viz., Haitain relief. The most surprising and unlikely comes out this week courtesy of Pogues front man and legendary tippler Shane MacGowan, who rounded up a small group of musical confederates to cover Screamn’ Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put a Spell on You.” Nick Cave, Chrissie Hynde and Mick Jones all make sterling contributions, and there’s even a little-known actor with the last name Depp on lead guitar. Video after the jump.
