Acclaimed avant-garde designer Gareth Pugh and cosmetics giant MAC have been working together on a makeup line for going on two years, and the suspense has been killing us. So good thing it was just announced that this November, Gareth Pugh for MAC will finally launch. Until then, we only have hints about what to expect from the Rick Owens protégé, who comes from a fine lineage of Goth-inspired British showmen.

Just like seasons past, enfant terrible Gareth Pugh opted to forgo a traditional runway presentation in Paris this week in favor of a short film, which premiered exclusively on ShowStudio. And his departures from the norm didn't stop there. Along with designers like Christopher Bailey of Burberry and Rad Hourani, Pugh is offering up a little something from his SS11 collection for purchase immediately following its public debut. In essence, he's sloughing off both the runway and the seasonal shopping model in one fell swoop. "In its bravura, its beauty, and its possibility of going viral to hundreds of million of people via ShowStudio and over the Internet, this grand slam in the virtual world poses a question that is increasingly being asked by both designers and executives: Is a fashion show really necessary?" Suzy Menkes writes in the New York Times.

Rumor has it British designer Gareth Pugh might be headed to Thierry Mugler. The brand, founded by its namesake back in 1975, has since come under the creative directorship of Paco Rabanne alumnae Rosemary Rodriguez. (Mugler has kept busy designing custom costumes for Beyonce's tour as well as launching books and collaborating with Cirque du Soleil.) Pugh, having garnered loads of critical acclaim and frenzied fashion followers since his own brand's launch in 2003, is apparently in talks with Mugler. Women's Wear Daily reports, "according to sources, the Paris-based fashion and fragrance house has held talks with the London-based wunderkind, known for his out-of-this-world silhouettes and theatrical shows."

In recent seasons there has been no shortage of fashion documentaries offering behind-the-scenes looks at designers, from Karl Lagerfeld and Valentino to Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler. But thanks to a new collaboration between Gareth Pugh and the multimedia online outlet SHOWStudio (founded by fashion photographer Nick Knight), fashion followers are about to get an entirely different perspective on a revered designer's creative process. "The avant-garde designer, famed for his outlandish creations, is setting up a temporary workspace in Bruton Place, home of the recently opened SHOWstudio store," says Elle UK.

In Milk Studios' garage last night, wunderkind Gareth Pugh presented a four-part video installation (projected onto an oversized cube) that will serve as "a preview, not a trailer," in his own words, to his upcoming SS10 presentation in Paris. Shot by director Ruth Hogben, who is likewise responsible for the video for Pugh's FW09 collection (which took the place of a runway show), each video is meant to represent one of the four natural elements ... that is, in a distinctly abstract manner. SHOWstudio simultaneously broadcast the film online, which is still visible here. As for Pugh, we stole a few minutes with the Paris-by-way-of-England designer who was less than 24 hours into his NYC stay. Unfortunately, it took us a moment to procure seats away from the hustle and bustle due to the fact that one of Milk Studio's security guards was convinced that Pugh's good friend and artist Matthew Stone, who was also in attendance, was in fact the designer and at fist refused to let Pugh and I backstage.

In seasons past, numerous designers have forgone traditional collection presentations in favor of short films or multimedia installations -- and the trend has only gained steam given the recession's recent squeezing of fashion houses' resources. So it's not exactly a shock that heavyweights like Alexander McQueen and Stefani Pilati of YSL are sitting out SS10 presentations (which just wrapped in Milan and kick off in Paris today) this season, and instead supplying films in place of shows. McQueen enlisted fashion photog David Sims to help him create a film about a tortured artist (in some frames clad solely in tightie whities), and, though it's obviously intended to disturb, the end result feels more like The Strangers than The Shining.

Big news from the Gareth Pugh camp –-- and, no, it’s not Dior Homme-related. The designer, who surprised the fashion world yesterday in Paris with a Fall 09 collection presented in video format as opposed to a runway show, has been hard at work on footwear as well as make-up, says WWD. Donning head-to-toe Pugh will soon be possible.
