Green Day

I'm just going to go ahead and say it. I'm not a fan of Green Day.  I liked Dookie, but anything beyond that just never reached my radar. But who am I to argue with legions of Broadway fans who turned up to see American Idiot?  Apparently they are still as relevant and beloved as ever and even picked up a modeling gig with John Varvatos.  The ads are up now, along with a Man On Wire-styled video.

Self-proclaimed music fiend John Varvatos has turned artists like Iggy Pop, The Roots, Cheap Trick, and Alice Cooper into models for his previous campaigns, so it was only a matter of time before he asked Green Day to rep his brand. For the American menswear designer's spring ad campaign captured by photographer Danny Clinch, band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt are found chilling on an iron beam against the Manhattan skyline—completely unfazed by the fact that they're dangerously up high—because that's just what punk rockers do.

For those of you not in the loop, The Rolling Stones, "The Greatest Rock 'n Roll Band In The World," are re-releasing the greatest rock 'n roll album of all time (I will brook no contention on this point) Exile on Main St. next week on May 18. To celebrate/promote the Exile re-release, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is hosting a series of contemporary artists performing classic songs from Exile every night this week. Last night's artist was Green Day, and they tore the roof off the 30 Rock studio with an electric performance of "Rip This Joint."

Green Day will soon be joining the ranks of big-ticket acts to make the jump from CD to stage, when their new musical American Idiot debuts this fall at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California. Adapted from their Grammy-winning album of the same title, American Idiot is slated to open the theater’s 2009-2010 season, running from September 4th to October 11th. According to Green Day’s website, “the musical is a collaboration between Green Day — the Bay Area rock trio consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool — and Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening.
