Tamara Mellon Jimmy Choo

Carrie Bradshaw is crying on the fictional shoulder of Mr. Big right now. Tamara Mellon, who founded shoe line Jimmy Choo 16 years ago, is stepping down, along with the company’s current chief executive, Joshua Schulman, as the new owner takes over. What does this mean for the brand?

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Jimmy Choo line, co-founder Tamara Mellon commissioned Marilyn Minter to photograph the Crystal Anniversary Collection, featuring sky-high stilettos encrusted with crystals and jewels. Following in the vein of Minter’s previous work of close-ups of wet, dirty shoes, the Jimmy Choo photographs feature detail shots of the classic Choo silhouettes, splashing around in gold liquid.

Riding high from the success of the men’s H&M Jimmy Choo line (pictured), Choo has decided to bring back men’s shoes for his 2011 collection. As one of the more prominent high-end shoe designers for women, Choo’s designs will invariably be expensive for men as well, but as chief creative officer Tamara Mellon notes, the first thing a woman looks at is a man’s shoes.

What is with women and shoe shopping? Is it the way a pair of Louboutins make our legs look a mile long? Is it the sweet smell of buttery leather Prada boots? Or perhaps, that technically, we can get away with wearing our favorite pair every day if we choose to do so? I’m not sure what the allure is exactly, but one thing is certain: we love our shoes. We can have 100 pairs and it’s still not enough. We will suffer immensely for the sake of fashion and a great pair of shoes. We have entire websites dedicated to shoes. We even look at shoes on men. I have a friend who will not give a guy a chance if he’s wearing, in her opinion, “bad shoes.” So let’s look at some beautiful shoes that we would dump our boyfriends for and blow entire paychecks on. Here’s the dream team of foot candy. And, if you need your fix, Net-a-Porter is having a huge sale!

Jimmy Choo fanatics can quit biting their perfectly manicured fingernails in anticipation. The long-awaited Jimmy Choo Eau De Parfum has finally come to fruition. I know it's true because I hold in my hand the wildly coveted bottle. After attending the launch party this week, I've also got all of the details: the fragrance will launch February 2010 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Embodying Tamara Mellon's vision for Jimmy Choo—femininity, luxury, and style—in a bottle, the founder and Chief Creative Officer of Jimmy Choo has always had her eye on developing a fragrance, stating "fragrance has always been part of my vision for Jimmy Choo, to fully extend the Jimmy Choo lifestyle, eveloping a woman with the sensuality and essence of the brand." Her vision comes in a stunning bottle, bearing notes of tiger orchid and patchouli.

Associating a new scent with footwear isn't a branding initiative I'd call bulletproof, but I was nonetheless intrigued to find a save-the-date invite to a press launch for a new fragrance from stiletto hawks Jimmy Choo in my inbox this morning. Not that it's surprising that Jimmy Choo, the legendary accessory company made infamous thanks to Carrie Bradshaw, should be releasing a fragrance. In fact, it's been a long time coming - rumors of a Choo fragrance have been brewing since early 2007.
