Green Day

I'm just going to go ahead and say it. I'm not a fan of Green Day.  I liked Dookie, but anything beyond that just never reached my radar. But who am I to argue with legions of Broadway fans who turned up to see American Idiot?  Apparently they are still as relevant and beloved as ever and even picked up a modeling gig with John Varvatos.  The ads are up now, along with a Man On Wire-styled video.

Green Day

Self-proclaimed music fiend John Varvatos has turned artists like Iggy Pop, The Roots, Cheap Trick, and Alice Cooper into models for his previous campaigns, so it was only a matter of time before he asked Green Day to rep his brand. For the American menswear designer's spring ad campaign captured by photographer Danny Clinch, band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt are found chilling on an iron beam against the Manhattan skyline—completely unfazed by the fact that they're dangerously up high—because that's just what punk rockers do.

I go away for a few days and the place falls apart. The closing of the Chelsea Hotel to guests must be noted here. Among its numerous and well-documented achievements, it was the place where nightlife lived, crashed, and partied. In its last 40 or so years, it was a place where scenesters hooked up with scenesters, rock stars behaved badly, artists found their vim, and writers became unblocked. It was a cauldron of creativity. I lived there for a bit, high on top in its penthouse peak, with a panoramic view of the relevant world.

Tonight will find me at Irving Plaza for Joey Ramone’s 11th Annual Birthday Bash. Joey, of course, passed away back in 2001 from lymphoma but he would have been 60-years-old today. Punks like me never thought of being 60. Even 40 seemed ridiculous. It meant being “old” and at its core punk was youthful, hormonal, frustrating, and rebellious. It was something for 20-somethings. Now, a generation of survivors of that era will gather to see their aging icons on stage and get a whiff of the best days of our lives.

VF Corp., which also owns 7 For All Mankind and John Varvatos, has acquired the bankrupt Rock & Republic brand for $57 million, reports WWD. Under the deal, VF Corp. will purchase the Rock & Republic brand name, but will not obtain it’s business operations or retail boutiques. Owner Michael Ball launched Rock & Republic in 2002 as a high-end rock-inspired denim collection. The brand exploded on the market with tremendous success and expanded into handbags, shoes, and a full ready-to-wear line including dresses, suits, blouses, trousers, and workout wear.

The John Varvatos kind of guy is the kind of guy I want to smell—among other things. Tommy Ton would photograph this kind of guy outside his office wearing a slim suit and motorcycle boots. And the best thing? This kind of guy doesn't even know who Tommy Ton is. Already boasting three fragrances in the John Varvatos range, this rugged, hip, motorcylce-boot-wearing, good-smelling guy is now celebrating his 10th Anniversary, and John Varvatos' present to him is a 10th Anniversary Special Edition fragrance. Take a deep breath.

My fashion week game plan is to ignore fashion week, but that’s sort of like not hearing those vuvuzelas at the World Cup. It’s constantly there, and always annoying. I did walk by the Chanel store, which was all decked out for their Fashion Week extravaganza. The black set was magical late at night, with a lone security guard. I suppose grand people gathered there during the day to ooh and ahh. I had been ooh-ing and ahh-ing at Don Hill's all weekend, as the best joint in many a year was flexing its muscles and showcasing great talent and possibilities. I’ll recap all of that tomorrow. So far this “best club in years” has put on Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Iggy Pop, and Courtney Love. My darling Amanda is primping for Crystal Castles as I write this.

Last night, we descended into the glam-punk world of 315 Bowery for "Thursday Night Live," an event which paid homage to the space’s roots. Two years ago, John Varvatos took over the CGBG address (20% off via Access Network Perks, by the way!), turning the iconic rock venue into a Bowery storefront. Despite the tears shed over the loss of punk’s most notorious landmark, the interior has done its part to stay true to the initial spirit: relics of times past litter the room and original graffiti covers the walls, keeping the bohemian rock feel alive with the store’s bad-ass boudoir vibe.
