Back in June, it was revealed that Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire was a stone-cold poker shark who won over $300,000 in illegal, high stakes card games between himself and other Hollywood A-listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck. Rather than continue to be investigated for these poker games, Macguire forked over $80,000 to settle his involvement in further litigation. A judge still has to decide whether whether this is OK or not, and that hearing will be on December 21st.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a cool guy, that's no secret. One of the biggest movie stars on the planet, he is known to pick extremely challenging and diverse parts, acting his actorly heart out in such lauded motion pictures like Titanic, Gangs of New York, and Catch Me If You Can. He's an actor's actor; the kind of thespian that is so good at his job that you often forget you're watching him act at all. 

So we saw Inception yesterday, and you don't need us to tell you it's a masterpiece. That's already been determined by people who get paid to determine such things. What we can offer is a few off-hand observations that maybe some reviewers missed. Like, how Ellen Page continues her reign as cinema's greatest asexual beauty, or how Lukas Haas is still reaping the rewards of his Pussy Posse membership with a tiny role in the film's opening sequence. There are, of course, themes and ideas in this movie that will be discussed to a much greater extent in psychology courses and at coke parties, but for more light-hearted impressions on a very heavy-hearted film, click the jump.

19-year-old thief and career conman Colton Harris-Moore has reportedly evaded authorities in the U.S. by crash-landing a stolen plane on a small island in the Bahamas. Isn't that sort of what happens in a Leonardo DiCaprio movie from the actor's not-quite-a-man-pretty-boy prime? Kind of...

Last week, England’s The Sun reported that Martin Scorsese was a fan of Rupert Grint, he of Ron Beastly fame. The article quoted the director extensively, underscoring Scorsese’s admiration for Grint’s work in the Harry Potter films, and his belief that the young actor could very well be the next Leonardo DiCaprio. Only problem is: Scorsese says it’s bunk. In a statement issued to The Guardian yesterday, he said, “With respect to the Harry Potter films, regrettably I've never seen them and therefore I'm not able to discuss them or the performances in them in any way.” Woops.

Happy Tears - We grow old. It goes without saying, and yet, we don’t say it much. Happy Tears contends with this inevitability. Parker Posey and Demi Moore play sisters who return home to care for their increasingly delusional father (Rip Torn). Mitchell Lichtenstein, director of vagina dentata classic Teeth, honors his own father, late pop-art star Roy Lichtenstein, by crafting whimsical fantasy sequences that mimic his work. Posey and Moore aren’t always believable as kin and, poetically, it’s left to the old folks to steal the show: Torn’s peculiar brand of crazy -- unlike his character -- never gets old, while Ellen Barkin is downright resplendent as an aging sexpot who claims to be his nurse. (Think: Elle Woods in 30 years, rocking a prop stethoscope.) -- Eiseley Tauginas

Richard Schickel’s new Vanity Fair piece on the production of Raging Bull coincides with the release of Scorsese’s latest, Shutter Island, but the new film doesn’t rate a single mention. There’s nothing extraordinary in this; the piece is simply mum about its timeliness, but an informal comparison between the two pictures nevertheless becomes inevitable for the reader (sorry Ben, I know you think that's not fair). Operatic, uniquely bold in structure and theme and born out of a period of tremendous turbulence for its still-30-something director, Raging Bull appears to be everything that Shutter Island is not, and it’s difficult not to read Schickel’s piece as an unintended elegy for the Scorsese that once was.

It’s been bandied about for some time now that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play Sinatra in a film directed by Martin Scorsese. Last night after the premiere of Scorsese's latest, Shutter Island, Roger Friedman caught up with the venerable director who confirmed a couple of things about the project: 1.) it’s still on, 2.) it wont be his next picture, and 3.) DiCaprio won’t be doing any singing. “With those records?” Scorsese rhetorically asked. “Frank will do the singing.” So what's Scorsese up to next?
