Outlaw Group Art Show

Robert Aloia has invited me to his Outlaw Group Art Show, presented by 2feet12inches and opening tonight. I even contributed a piece to the show. No, silly; I'm not painting, but I do possess an original painting by my real outlaw pal Michael Alig. Michael's still up in the big house doing hard time for murder and other not-so-nice things. It's been 14 years so far. He spends his hard time painting and writing and planning a future. I have shown the piece around smart art types and the general consensus is "Wow." He seems to have talent. Speaking of talent, I will be DJing this shindig from 8pm till 9pm before I have to rush off to Hotel Chantelle for my regular Thursday night gig which is so much fun. I have a special guest, and they're adding some talent to the promotional side so I'm psyched.

So, I warned you that I'd be whipping this horse, but as far as I can remember this is the first time I’ve gotten an IMDB listing. Yes, I’m talking about the Limelight documentary again, and since I was one of the players at the now defunct club, I am a player now. That statement has so many layers, so I'm just going to ponder it. Celebrity lawyer Benjamin Brafman attended the premiere and was applauded loudly when his name appeared during the credits. He got Peter Gatien off. Gee—I hope I didn't spoil the ending.

I'm sure at one point you’ll be sick of all the chatter about the Limelight film opening this week, but I think it's significant and I'm going to write about it. Maybe there will be a Pacha movie, or a Marquee movie, or a Provocateur movie—but I doubt it. Limelight: The Rise and Fall of New York's Greatest Nightclub Empire is a documentary that deals with certain happenings at that club and the other three joints Peter Gatien owned and operated back in the day.

Jonny Lennon's party over at Good Units was simply great. The space allows every event to feel loose and uncontrolled, like a warehouse party or gymnasium soiree. About a thousand great people came to enjoy each other's company and DJ ?uestlove and Cassidy's set. Although it was great, it was far from perfect, and I hope they adjust things for next time. Despite awesome sets from the 2 great spinsters, the crowd didn’t linger very long. Some were off to other events, but many left because conditions were a little hard to stomach.

I'm being drawn to the area surrounding the Ganesvoort Park Hotel more and more. Development and action in that area seems to be increasing. The Ganesvoort Park Avenue's entry is a much improved version of its Meatpacking namesake's design. It’s southern MPD entry was retrofitted to accommodate the success of its rooftop, and, of course, Provocateur. As food and beverage drives certain hotel brands, the venues will be designed with their restaurants and watering holes soundproofed, accessible through street and internal doors and passages. They are increasingly integral to success—driving room rates and attracting desired clientele, and even distracting certain "types." The bars, restaurants, lounges, and the pool area at Ganesvoort Park were built with this mindset, and not with afterthoughts.

What was that line Bogie tossed at Ingrid Bergman to get her to run off with that dapper old guy at the end of Casablanca? Oh yeah: ”We’ll always have Paris.” I guess he was right, as there doesn’t seem to be an end to how much Clubland loves to associate with the romanticism of gay old Paree. Everybody is on the edge of their seat for Le Baron, which somebody told me will be “The Baron” when it slams into lower Mulberry Street. Indeed it will slam, as young romantics everywhere see it as the second coming. It’s actually the third coming, as they already have one in Paris and Tokyo, too.

The "Party Monster" was not released, as many had expected. Instead, the powers that be in Albany have decided that Michael Alig will walk amongst us next November—provided that he behaves himself. Although this has been viewed by many as an unfair outcome, it was expected by me and mine. Alig, who was sentenced to serving ten to twenty years for the murder of Angel Melendez, has almost reached his "due date.” The date that peeps serving that sentence are normally set free, with a big "unless" attached to it. This particular "unless" has to do with behavior and "good time.” Michael, always good at showing people a good time, violated a rule here and there, and experienced a loss of "good time," totaling six years. You do the math. That six year loss brings him up to his twenty. However, (another huge word) inmates have opportunities to earn back their "good time" by doing extra work, and completing programs.

Did you miss me? I missed you. I have now realized fully that Brooklyn is not just a state of mind but an actual place, with a river between me and what I have always known as home. I still live in boxes and my computer is awaiting the services of the cable guy. I'm not good at moving, better at shaking. I have deigned to try writing from an internet café, but it's going to be tough. Everything is vegan and soy and I was told by the nice man that the honey lavender corn muffin made with spelt is awesome. Today, as boxes are recycled and the normal chaos of my home life crawls out from under the piles of stuff, I return to write. Napolean leaving Elba is a fair comparison. I even learned a palindrome: “Able was I ere I saw Elba.''

The Gansevoort Park Avenue South Hotel has arrived. BlackBook celebrated its opening with dear friends last night. I had toured the property with Gansevoort owner Michael Achenbaum when I interviewed him for this column the first week of August. Back then it was a jigsaw puzzle of fine finishes and furniture. Last night, the electricians and plumbers were replaced by well-heeled patrons, and of course the beautiful and highly intelligent BlackBook staff. There were torrents of Grey Goose and Amstels and all were warm and fuzzy, excited to be there. They actually invited me this time. The place sprawled up and down and left and right. There were undiscovered countries everywhere. There was a cute lounge here, and though those doors over there, a swimming pool. You walked up that way, and there was another bar, and back that way, a chic room. It had all come together beautifully and was occupied well. I always like a place you can get lost in ‘cause every so often you get found. It is room after room, and all have sweet little balconies for those who still indulge. My co-conspirators included gal pal Amanda Noa and Sailor Jerry’s Dana Dynamite. The party was dynamite in more ways than one. It's a great space to hold an event and it bodes well for hotels built with hospitality and food and beverage services that are well-considered instead of retro-fitted. The gals grabbed ultra-fun gift bags and made plans to sip lemonades by the pool this weekend. The painted pin-up on the bottom of the pool still said, “I’m Waiting,” but, finally, that’s no longer true for those who've been anticipating the opening of the Gansevoort Park Avenue South.
