The 2011 edition of the famed Pirelli calendar was recently unveiled in Moscow by Karl Lagerfeld, who shot the images for his “Mythology” theme. Posing his models as different deities from ancient Rome and Greece, the calendar offers 36 black-and-white images, including actress Julianne Moore who was photographed as Hera, the wife of Zeus. “I wanted to do something different. I looked at all the other calendars,” Lagerfeld told Women's Wear Daily, adding he had a message "of timeless beauty and youth. Skin magazines are nothing new. Titles like Oui and Modern Man were once kept under your parent's beds, and are now on bookshelves belonging to today's artists and high fashion photographers. Skin mags have since evolved into slick and shiny pop porn, with mags like Maxim showing off starlets comparable to Tara Reid with major airbrushing, uncomfortable posing and cheesy lighting.

Word leaked a few months ago that Terry Richardson is the fashion photographer who’ll have the honor of shooting Pirelli’s calendar for 2010. Now comes news that Richardson has set up shop in Trancoso, Bahia, Brazil, and is snapping mannequins that include Ana Beatriz Barros, Gracie Carvalho, Georgina Stojiljkovic and (maybe) Catherine McNeil. The much-anticipated almanac, which debuted in 1964, isn’t available for purchase; rather it’s gifted to a minute group of tastemakers and Pirelli clients of choice. But, given the fact that the calendar continually showcases top talents—past photogs range from Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts, to Inez and Vinoodh and Mert and Marcus, while mannequins have included everyone from Naomi, Gisele and Kate to Sophia Loren—Pirelli’s calendars are as feverishly coveted as high-end art tomes or exhibition catalogs.
