Now that Billy Crystal is set to host the Oscars in February, it was only a matter of time before the Hollywood Foreign Press Association got around to picking a host for the Golden Globes, which are set to air on January 15th. Ricky Gervais is set to host for the third year in a row, but the news does not come without a bit of controversy following the British comic's delivery last January.

Ricky Gervais has had a change of heart since quitting Twitter last January. The comedian rejoined the site a few days ago and has sent out several Tweets promoting An Idiot Abroad and his new show Life's Too Short, which may be why he's back. But who cares? A reason isn't necessary for the kind of stuff he's sending out. In asking "How can I prove it's me though? This was Patrick Swayze's problem in Ghost," he's come up with some hilarious evidence. Though this morning he's been struggling with a learning curve, he did manage to send out a photo involving himself, Johnny Depp, and a midget in a compromising situation.

How do you make the same jokes in two different awards shows, and yet inspire two opposite reactions? Ricky Gervais made fun of Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr. at the Golden Globes; both Sheen and Downey Jr. were mocked at the Oscars as well, for exactly the same reasons. The answer is simple! Gervais made jokes about the truth, while the Oscar jokes targeting the same people were basically lies. And unfunny lies at that.

Yesterday, Ricky Gervais killed a horse and proceeded to bludgeon it when he released a rather petty and unfunny fake intro/tirade for Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway to read at Sunday's ceremony. He must have known that it could get back to them, since he's a famous guy and thus people pay attention to him, but never could he have imagined that he'd actually get to watch them perform a chunk of it on video.

Then they look at me, and say, 'I can't process it!' No, and you never will! Stop trying! Just sit back and enjoy the show!" [TMZ]

Ricky Gervais’ crude Golden Globes humor is not welcome at the Oscars. In fact, Anne Hathaway and her time traveling co-host, James Franco, plan to keep it totally PC. "I can guarantee that if you're looking for someone to call people out, we're not your hosts,” says Hathaway. With that in mind, Gervais has penned his very own middle-finger-to-the-Academy opening for the wholesome duo. Gervais posted the would-be Oscars bit on his blog, giving tailored speaking roles to Franco and Hathaway.

Sunday night's Golden Globes were kind of a mess. Speeches were awful, some winners were undeserving, and, contrary to prevailing opinion, there wasn't nearly enough Ricky Gervais, whose inappropriate comments made the show worth watching. Seriously, Foreign Press, can we invite him back next year? One of the positive aspects of the Golden Globes is that the awards show helps inspire actors who daydream about being Golden Globe winners. In fact, this year they deliberately brought on super-young celebrities as hosts (Zac Efron, Justin Beiber, that vampire guy) to lure a younger demographic. And maybe that awkward acceptance speech (here's looking at you, Natalie Portman) will ultimately become a reality for a handful of those wanna-be thespians. But in the meantime, aspiring actors of all ages can live vicariously through the nominees at The Peninsula Beverly Hills.
