McGinley

There are so many good fashion films popping up as of late that we can hardly contain ourselves. For Edun's spring 2012 campaign, acclaimed artist Ryan McGinley filmed a group of models, including Bradley Soileau and Charlotte Free, casually interacting with a bunch of friendly butterflies. But because it's under the direction of the imaginative and somewhat controversial McGinley, butterflies aren't just hanging around said pretty people—they're in their mouths, in their pants, and generally up in their business. And it works.

Artist Janine "Jah Jah" Gordon is suing hipster photographer Ryan McGinley for allegedly basing 150 photographs on Gordon's work. Some of the photographs in question include Levi's ads, and Levi's is a co-defendant in the suit. The similarities between the artworks in question are pretty much undeniable. But are they intentional?

My first vision of Patti Smith is a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. She’s a few feet from me on a dark stage in a club, long lost in addled memory. Photographer Ryan McGinley sold a downtown vision of sex, skateboarding and skinniness to an art world clamoring for authenticity. His brand of mystical and timeless cool is exemplified in grimy Polaroids and ethereal nudes -- groups of pretty and pale people either dressed really well or not at all, touching one another, looking solemn or both. McGinley's angelic subjects peddle sexuality without exploiting debauchery, allowing the eroticism to transcend highbrow and lowbrow, looking both classy and marketable. Hence, McGinley's solo show at the Whitney Museum at age 24, then banking on the Levi's "All I Got Is All I Need" campaign. This month, he continues along that dichotomous path between art and consumerism with a stunning Winter Olympics spread for the New York Times Magazine and a new commercial for Levi's and Opening Ceremony.
