Tonight I will DJ at "My Favorite Party" largely because my favorite DJ, entrepreneur, restaurateur, and favorite person Paul Sevigny has asked me to. He's telling me to think outside of the box. I haven't thought inside the box since Reagan was president...and even then the box contained a pipe, some combustibles and keys to my Rickie Stickie Tickied Volkswagen Camper. These Wednesday night shindigs at Le Bain started a couple weeks ago but now they’ve added early acoustic sets.

On Wednesday, anybody who is anybody will be dressing up and having fun at Dream Downtown. The Meatpacking District continues to evolve, and with three colossal hotels—Dream plus Standard plus Gansevoort—it's flush with hospitality complexes. The lines defining day and night for the jet set/party set are obscuring rapidly. In fact, the lines between clubs, restaurants, and hotels are nearly completely blurred, and no amount of prescription bifocals will clear it up.

A recent scientific study has just proved the obvious, that those who live by night are smarter than their early-riser counterparts. Which makes me smarter than everyone. If you don’t believe me, just ask my mother. I get up at 7am every day to write this column, and more often than not, I am up real late doing real late things. A 2am crash and burn is considered an early night. I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and there’s no stopping me now. I figure I’ll get all the sleep I will ever need in 20 or 30 years. I lifted an article from TheWeek.com as evidence of the genius of the night.

It's super lovely out. Sorta reminds me of summer, which invariably reminds me of short dresses, which reminds me of skinny dipping, which reminds me of Le Bain. Which brings me to my point: Standard enthusiasts have something to look forward to on Sundays at Le Bain. Jerome Viger-Kohler, the French house legend behind the Respect is Burning parties of the ‘90s (hosting acts like Dimitri from Paris and Daft Punk), and who brought his Parisian party to NYC’s Twilo from 1998 to 2001, has teamed up DJ Neil Aline to host Nouveau York every Sunday from 7:00pm to 2:00am at Le Bain. The parties have been running for a while already (they threw Le Bain's Halloween Party), but the November and December lineup will surely continue to bring out the DFA and dance followers in droves. Naturally, "the door policy is to the doorman's discretion." Check out the lineup and event photos.

I left California with fun facts resonating in my head. First, I heard that In L.A. there are more medical marijuana distribution joints than there are Starbucks. Secondly, the people who live in Venice Beach call themselves Ven-utians. My crew has settled there and in West Hollywood. I ate strange fruit and peed next to movie stars in restaurant bathrooms. I had conversations with local nightlife shakers about celebrities as commodities and their car-based clientele. In good old New York it's hard to make a place that is what we call a "destination” work. Notable exceptions have been Bungalow 8, Area, Cielo, Lotus, and The World, which popped up in hoods that were less than traveled.

Los Angeles is still recovering from a crazy Halloween weekend. The highlights: 400,000-plus costumed freaks in West Hollywood for the city’s annual parade; Maxim filming a forthcoming film called Halloween House at the actual house used in the original Halloween (synergy!); two sold-out, hectic nights at the HARD Haunted Mansion music festival; and some starry soirees at Voyeur ( where Glee’s Matt Morrison held a private party) and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (for Maroon 5’s Bacardi-sponsored annual throwdown). We musn’t forget our own bash at The Standard in West Hollywood (more on that later) or the opening party for L.A.’s newest supper club, called, er, Supperclub. After the jump, a short, spooky recap.

This is an unbelievably frantic Friday. Good news or bad news first? Lets do bad. Yesterday, the governing powers swooped in and shuttered Santos’ Party House. I spoke to sources within and they spoke of a couple of marijuana buys and an undercover being offered cocaine in a bathroom. These events, according to my mouthpiece, happened a few months ago. The police have been sitting on the Nuisance Abatement Order for a bit, I guess waiting for the most damaging time to serve it. Like I noted before, Halloween is an important revenue source for clubs. Santos’ is not a wealthy club. They make their money on admissions. Their crowd isn’t a monied bottle crew, it’s a couple of drinks—if that—kind of place. They have eked out a living, sometimes barely surviving. They can’t afford to be closed, and their staff is hurting without jobs in this rough economy. Santos’ attracts many events that cater to people of color, and I can’t help but wonder if the recent spate of late-night violence happening around town has not led to a racially motivated crackdown. From my experience, there are few color-blind cops.

Last night Paper magazine held their sixth annual Paper Nightlife Awards. It's been touted as "our version of the nightlife Oscars" by Publisher and Editor-in-Chief David Hershkovits, and we've been stumbling through the parties right along with them, as they nominate the best new and noteworthy names and places. A few years ago, we emerged ill and inked, "sweating vodka with bright red hearts, swastikas, and the name 'Audrina' scrawled across a back in paint and permanent marker." We're older now, and though we're none the wiser, we've decided not to post about the curious relics we woke up with this morning. Instead, we'll simply recap who/what won, and what we're looking forward to trying out in the near future.
