Another season, another Fashion Week. Starting tomorrow, Manhattan will be invaded by race-walking clothes-whores in tight pants, gaudy-chic eyewear, and fur that ain't faux. Packed schedules and the scant number of cabs commuting between Lincoln Center and Milk Studios (where the greatest concentration of runway presentations will be held) make it necessary for designers to promise both steak and sizzle when battling for the attention of buyers, editors, and bloggers. Choosing which show to attend can sometimes be as much about the clothes as it is the spectacle. Herewith, five presentations upping the ante on hype this season.

Gentlemen, if you’re feeling the need to splurge this winter—you know, Gstaad via your G550 from Teterboro—why not round it out with this amazing duck-down puffer jacket from Moncler's Gamme Bleu line? First images of famed menswear designer Thom Browne's playfully preppy new women's collection for SS11 have surfaced. Word of the brand extension first spread in June of this year. The collection won't mark the first time Browne's designed for the fairer sex: he sold a ladies-only capsule collection at Barneys and designed for women by way of his collaborative line Black Fleece for Brooks Brothers. But the collection, which Jak & Jil photographer Tommy Ton recently captured, and which debuts this spring, is definitely one-of-a-kind. While there are trenches, polo shirts, and pleated skirts in a dark gray and black palette - each with a touch of Browne's oddball tailoring and unique sensibility - the collection also includes a few bright and whimsical pieces. Cardigans and collared shirts in predominantly red, white, and blue plaid make an appearance, as do suit separates embossed with images of mermaids.

When menswear designer Robert Childs first entered the offices of Thom Browne, he was a student at FIT and an intern at Adam Kimmel. He saw himself designing extreme sports ware and didn’t own a suit. “Never once did it cross my mind where I was like, ‘Man, I want to work for Thom Browne,’” says Childs. “It was actually kind of the other way around. I was always telling my friends, ‘I’m in fashion because I never want to wear a suit.’ I just kind of stumbled into it.” Now Childs spends his days overseeing Browne’s meticulously tailored designs, from start to finish: “My job is to help Thom realize the collections from concept to the show. Pretty much anything he needs to get done, I facilitate.” This season, that includes Thom Browne’s much-anticipated first collection for women. Here's Childs on the new collection, the Thom Browne design process, and his own intriguing story—how he went from community college drop-out to showroom staple.

On my way to an AM market appointment in the Garment District, I stumbled upon a curious collection of mannequins: Sidewalk Catwalk. These were mannequins sporting designs by 32 local talents frozen in mid-strut, marching down Broadway.

This fall, modern men's wear maven Thom Browne is finally branching out into the women's market. The designer, who is most associated with slim-fitting tailoring and high-water trouser lengths, is looking to the ladies for his latest endeavor. Women's Wear Daily points out, "Browne has tested these waters before, selling a capsule collection at Barneys New York for a couple of seasons in 2007 and 2008 [pictured here]." He also designs women's wear via his ongoing collaboration with Brooks Brothers, a coed line called Black Fleece. But, when left to him own devices, how should ladies look in Brown's eyes?

Three new noteworthy capsule collections are nearly ready to hit retailer's racks... and between the triad there's something for everyone. First up is Kova & T's line for Urban Outfitters (the mega chain having earned its stripes as a bona fide collaboration slut in seasons as of late). Lucky recently posted images of the project, called KNT by Kova &T, which is the brainchild of the latter's design duo: Christina Tang and Dasha Zhukova. (Although, Zhukova, at this point, is perhaps significantly more famous for being the still relatively new face behind POP Magazine.) Kova & T made a name for itself by introducing the world to latex leggings, but the collection for UO is decidedly less flashy--its punctuated by a pin-tucked minidress, polka dot skirt and lace and knit jumper. It hits stores mid-May.

Although few of the attendees at Elise Overland's SS10 show Sunday were the wiser, there was something off about the last look shown on Overland's runway. It's not that the show, chock-full of sumptuous leather cocktail dresses, slick leather-paneled leggings and stunning silk creations, was a miss as far as the clothes were concerned. Simply, the last model who strutted the runway was indeed a man (albeit one moonlighting as a woman with fake boobs, high-heels and slicked back hair). And Overland isn't alone this season when it comes to dabbling in cross-dressing.
