the darkness super bowl

Kelly Clarkson nailed the national anthem, Madonna got her “Vogue” on with some Greco-Roman gladiator dudes, and M.I.A. flipped the bird on camera, which means someone, somewhere is probably upset and hopefully this won't become another "wardrobe malfunction" and lead to another near-decade of safe and mostly-mediocre Super Bowl halftime shows. Outside the game and its pageantry, there were plenty of notable musical moments in the commercials, too. Here are just a few of 'em.

Jimmy Fallon and Rachel Dratch

Last night was full of nostalgia for SNL fans. During his monolgue, Jimmy Fallon, who was a cast member for six years, revealed it felt like he was coming home.  Raising the holiday spirit and helping the comedian-turned-late-night-host bring back some classic sketches was Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Horatio Sans, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan.

● For his 29th birthday, Lil Wayne got a ukelele from his daughter Reginae, a gumball machine from his girl Dhea, and a cover of his own "How To Love" from "his little homie" Justin Bieber. Not a bad haul! [PopDust] ● Demi and Ashton are on the rocks. Rumor has it that Demi is sick of Ashton's cheating, and so the two have been living apart since July and are readying a $290 million divorce. How do we know it's serious? They've both stopped tweeting. [NYDN] ● "Just because you're an actor or you make films or whatever, doesn't mean you're not entitled to your own personal privacy," said Scarlett Johansson in response to the nude pictures of her floating around on the internet. "It just feels unjust. It feels wrong." [NYDN]

● Glenn Beck is quitting Fox News later this year. Or maybe he was fired. (Roger Ailes doesn't seem to care as long as he's gone.) Beck told his followers, "We'll find each other." Meanwhile, Meredith Vieria is out at the Today show as soon as her contract is up, and Matt Lauer wants out now, too. Never forget that beyond the pitch-perfect Sarah Palin impersonations, the starring movie roles, and the red carpets, Tina Fey is first and foremost a writer. She reminds us of that today by doing the most writer-ish thing she could possibly do: Publishing a book. Bossypants is being called a collection of thoughts, observations, and memories of all things Fey, and critics are loving it. And since reading reviews of the work rather than the work itself is sort of my "thing," I noticed that a lot of these critics are comparing Fey's work to that of another all-powerful showbiz dame, Nora Ephron.

Tracy Morgan made an appearance on Inside the NBA last night, and during his short visit, the 30 Rock star managed to piss off viewers so much as to elicit a public apology from TNT. The offending moment came after Morgan was encouraged by co-hosts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith to weigh in on the physical allure of Sarah Palin (in contrast to his co-star Tina Fey). Obviously, Morgan cut straight to the point, blurting out that Palin “is good masturbation material.”

Yesterday NBC confirmed what we already knew: the next season of The Office will be Steve Carell's last. In their first official comments on the situation, NBC's president of prime-time entertainment Angela Bromstad told the AP that,"These things happen when you have such a major movie star in a show.” You have to wonder then—how long before that other major movie star currently starring in NBC's other hit comedy series leaves her show? And no, we're not talking about Amy Poehler.

Every year at the end of May, Mark Twain pushes aside the lid on his coffin, claws his way out of the fetid soil, and tries to anoint a new recipient of The Mark Twain Prize For American Humor, the prize granted to the funniest people in the world! This year, the deserving winner is Tina Fey, comedienne extraordinaire and my and every other comedy geek's future girlfriend if there is any justice in this world. Fey's career highlights include a nine year stint on Saturday Night Live, six Emmys and two Golden Globes for her TV series "30 Rock" (which she stars in, writes, and produces), and a successful movie career that's included such hits as Mean Girls and Date Night. Fey is only the third woman to win the award, after Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin won it in 2001 and 2003 respectively.
