UniqloUndercover

After confirming the end of their Jil Sander partnership last summer, Uniqlo announced that they would debut a new collaboration with cult Japanese brand Undercover for spring/summer 2012. This was quite exciting news, considering that the avant-garde label shows at Paris Fashion Week and the international fast-fashion retailer never ceases to impress us with their consistently creative ad campaigns. Now, the Undercover for Uniqlo "UU" capsule images are finally here, and they're something that the whole family will enjoy.

Jake & Amir

Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld are better and more informally known simply as Jake and Amir, and they are two best friends. (You gotta stop saying that.) (No.) They also have a Webby-award winning web series called "Jake and Amir." This is their take on four places they like, and one place they don't.

Flagship. It's one of those words that retailers, especially fashion retailers, use to remind the public that, yes, it's okay to go out and spend like bloody mad again. If we build it, you must come. And so here is (would we kid you?) 90,000 very new square feet from Japanese apparel giant Uniqlo, plopped down on one of the most profligate streets in one of the most shopping-happy cities, Fifth Avenue in New York. It's their biggest store in the entire world--which makes the company's theme, "Made For All," a rather literal statement.

The bitter NYC winter is officially here. To be honest, as a native Californian, I am NOT doing well with it. I’m literally putting on four layers of clothing and still shivering like an anorexic chihuahua. I always had these fantasies about all the ice skating I would do for my first winter in NYC. The closest I’ve come is sliding across an ice slick in my four-inch heels on Lexington. To add insult to injury, upon arriving at my destination I looked in the mirror to find my bangs gone poodle-kinky in mere minutes. Ugh. Winter wonderland fantasies kaput within hours of our first flurry of the season. Rough start for my debut NYC winter. Luckily, as fate would have it, on my way home I saw Charlize Theron in a Uniqlo ad.

The denim mandarins at Levi's are getting collaboration-happy this season. The brand, which has had an especially hard time competing in the premium denim market, has been engaging in partnerships with "iconic brands like Filson and more edgy designers like Opening Ceremony and Billy Reid. Several others will be announced before the end of the year, including one with Stussy," says Portfolio. It looks like Levi's, having witnessed established brands like Target and H&M reaping huge profits from limited-edition capsule collections, is following suit. Given the success of some their already-released collaborations, Levi's move just might produce its desired effect: "The Levi trucker jacket in Filson’s oil-tin cloth sold out in days and had to be reordered," according to Portfolio. Meanwhile, images of the third installation of another incredibly well-received designer partnership between Uniqlo and Jil Sander have surfaced.
