"I love a warm pig belly for my aching feet," says Helena Bonham-Carter's regal Red Queen in the new trailer for Tim Burton's highly anticipated re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. With her overgrown cephalus and Lynn Yaeger lips, Bonham-Carter returns with another character as wonderfully weird looking as she is out of her mind. A list of the eminent character actress's craziest star turns after the jump.
Hamlet's Ophelia. First came her role as the love interest to Mel Gibson's Hamlet in an adaptation of one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. Whether or not Ophelia actually killed herself will remain a contentious mystery, but girl had to be all sorts of crazy to get involved with a guy who talks to skulls.
Fight Club's Marla Singer. You thought Angie was hardcore in Girl, Interrupted? With her ratty hair, busted makeup and cigarettes that constantly dangle from her lower lips, Marla is one of the coolest people ever to appear on film, especially when she explains her affinity for self-help groups by saying, "It's cheaper than a movie, and there's free coffee."
Planet of the Ape's Ari. Here she plays queen of crazy Paula Abdul, if Paula Abdul were a female chimpanzee with enough balls to make a move on Mark Wahlberg.
Big Fish's The Witch. Most critics agree that this wasn't director Tim Burton's finest hour, but he was smart enough to cast a then-pregnant Bonham Carter as both the sweet and lovable Jenny and the one-eyed witch.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street's Mrs. Lovett. Looking a lot like Marla Singer, the delicious Mrs. Lovett -- also known as Nellie, Marjorie, Maggie, Sarah, Shirley, Wilhemia, and Claudetta -- makes, sells, and serves meat pies made from dead people. Can you blame us for wanting seconds?
