This video, a film bumper for movies shown at SXSW, takes the Super Mario Brothers gang and turns them into a bunch of sad, disaffected hipsters. Luigi almost fires Mario despite their fraternal bond: "You're a plumber, Mario. You need to stop doing so many mushrooms!" A smarmy artist dude who I think is supposed to be Bowser has stolen Peach away from Mario, whose mustache and suspenders are soo ironic. There's a lot of coffee and cigarettes, plus ecstasy-induced hallucinations.
Am I wrong in thinking they could make a feature-length film out of this (Oh God, I'm finding out right now that they already did back in 1993 -- it had John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper)? An emotionally affecting parody indie version à la this trailer has potential. Bowser's Castle is a huge gaudy mansion in L.A., Toad would be everyone's drug dealer, Mario would get a gold coin for every day of sobriety. It would be like Alpha Dog meets Me and You and Everyone We Know.
