Oh Mariah, it's always one step forward, two steps back with you! Most noted for strange-sounding album titles that tend to belie her pop genius, MC has twittered the name of her new album: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Barf.
But before you also throw up all over Mariah Carey's glittery hopes and dreams, consider her track record. In the past, we learned with The Emancipation of Mimi, over the course of six staggering singles, Carey's gift doesn't lie with stringing words together to form thoughtful proclamations. It starts, peaks, and ends with her doing something that, in some alternate universe, may or may not construe "singing." More importantly, before you write off Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel as an excuse for Carey to dance around in slutty garb that is at once ecclesiastical and geisha-like, consider how hard the motors in her head were whirring. She says of the album title, "Its very personal & dedicated to u." If only more pop stars would convey such intimacy with ampersands, omitted apostrophes, and single-letter pronouns.
Along with Mimi, Angel joins a profound, cloying oeuvre that counts Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow, Charmbracelet, Glitter, and of course E=MC2 among its titular feats.
