Having presided over Viktor & Rolf's SS2010 presentation, even debuting a pair of shimmery new songs, Róisín Murphy was due for a comeback of sorts. Especially after the whole Gucci campaign featuring her take on Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love" never quite reached its full potential. With "Orally Fixated" -- currently streaming on Murphy's Myspace page -- the singer comes out of a long hiatus sidestepping trends and looking to simultaneously punctuate this year and spark the next with overdue originality.
And why not? That's what made Overpowered and Ruby Blue such gems. And in an age where even Björk made the honest mistake of trying to hatch creative brilliance with the then-in-demand Timbaland, it's a cause for relief that Murphy hasn't caved to the broad electro-strokes of the usual culprits whose songs are ruling the charts. Although all that's immaterial, as Murphy's never led a blessed life on the charts and her music remains all the better for it.
Instead, she's forging ahead with her own deliciously disjointed melodies and rhythms. On November 16, "Orally Fixated" will be available at the usual places and as a free download at The Guardian for 48 hours. And until a proper video emerges, entertain yourself with her homage to John Waters, replete with nods to Divine and Lobstora.
